Defending champions Yorkshire were brought down to earth with a thud as Surrey secured victory within three days at Headingley.

Yorkshire were dismissed for 202 on a rain-affected day, crashing to a resounding innings and 168-run defeat against the side widely tipped to take their crown.

They started the day in the unenviable position of two for none, with only the showers that wiped out morning sessions the nation over offering any hope of salvation.

In the end it only delayed the inevitable, with Yorkshire losing three wickets for 12 runs when play got underway after lunch.

Nightwatchman Ryan Sidebottom was the first to go, flaying wildly at a straight ball from Martin Bicknell that sent his stumps crashing.

Only eight runs were added before Bicknell, who finished with three for 43, dismissed the dangerous Darren Lehmann, caught and bowled for one.

When Michael Lumb followed his captain back to the dressing room four runs later and Yorkshire descended to 32 for five, Surrey moved in for the kill.

Stand-in captain Mark Butcher installed all his men in catching positions, boasting a field of seven slips, silly point and short-leg.

The attacking move didn't have quite the desired effect, allowing Chris Taylor (52 not out), Chris Silverwood (38) and Richard Blakey (31) to get amongst the runs.

The showing of 21-year-old Taylor, who scored his highest first-class score, was a clear positive for Yorkshire in a match of many negatives.

He defiantly hung around for three-and-a-half hours and 126 balls when Surrey were anxious to finish Yorkshire off.

But the day - and the match - belonged very much to Surrey, with Pakistani Azhar Mahmood taking the wicket of last man Steve Kirby to finish with three for 18.

"It was a fantastic performance. I could not be happier; we played brilliantly," Surrey captain Mark Butcher commented.

"We think we did not do ourselves justice last year, so we want to put it right this time."
