Surrey quick to dominate

County Championship D1, Headingley: Yorkshire 140 v Surrey 115-0

  Latest scorecard

Surrey confirmed the suspicion they are the team to beat in Division One after an opening day of complete dominance against Yorkshire.

The champions were sent in to bat and the decision of Surrey's stand-in captain Mark Butcher was vindicated when Yorkshire were dismissed for a paltry 140.

Alex Tudor stood out for Surrey, taking four wickets to add to the seven he took against Sussex in the opening round.

Surrey openers Butcher and Ian Ward then showed in the evening session how easily the Headingley wicket can be played.

The pair were rarely troubled, Butcher unbeaten on 53 and Ward 51 as Surrey sped to 115 without loss at the close of play.

The early departure of Matthew Wood, dismissed by the in-form Tudor for a duck, set the tone and things improved little for Yorkshire.

They laboured for the most part, scoring at less than two runs an over with Michael Lumb's 30 the highest score for the innings.

Tudor conceded just 31 runs in his 19 overs, and he was ably assisted by Pakistani Azhar Mahmood, who took three for 33.
