Surrey rattle champions
Stewart hammers the ball through the covers
Stewart made Yorkshire pay for an early let-off
County Championship D1, Headingley, day two: Yorkshire 140 & 0-2 (at close); Surrey 1st innings 510

  Latest scorecard

Alec Stewart narrowly missed out on a century for the second time this season as Surrey piled on the agony for the 2001 champions.

Stewart, who made 99 against Sussex, capitalised on an early escape to reach 96 before being caught off all-rounder Gary Fellows.

Surrey had been given an ideal platform by Mark Butcher and Ian Ward who put on 161 before Stewart and Mark Ramprakash added 137 for the third wicket.

Paceman Steve Kirby kept plugging away to finish with five for 129 and Fellows claimed three for 90.

But there was more gloom for Yorkshire before the close as Matthew Wood was caught behind off Martin Bicknell and Scott Richardson was bowled by Alex Tudor without a run on the board.

They now face the prospect of begining their defence of the title with an innings defeat.

Excellent start

After a dismal first day batting display, Yorkshire were in desperate need of an early breakthrough with the ball when Surrey started the day on 115 for no wicket.

Chris Silverwood proved very expensive

But although the two Surrey openers played and missed several times, Yorkshire were kept waiting until Ward (70) dragged a ball from Silverwood into his stumps.

Butcher followed for 83 when he edged Kirby's first ball of the day to Matthew Wood in the slips, but when Stewart, on three, gave a similar chance to Chris Taylor off Ryan Sidebottom, he was unable to cling on.

It was an expensive miss as Stewart and Ramprakash cruised past their fifties, despite Darren Lehmann switching his bowlers around in search of a breakthrough.

The stand came to an end when Ramprakash was caught behind off Kirby for 65, and Stewart finally went with the score on 381, when he drove Fellows to Wood at cover, but he had done enough to keep his name in the minds of the England selectors.

Nadeem Shahid weighed in with 45, but Kirby picked up two more wickets in quick succession as Alex Tudor and Martin Bicknell were trapped lbw.

Pakistani all-rounder Azhar Mahmood produced some thoroughbred strokes in making an unbeaten 64 in just over two hours before Surrey were all out, having built a lead of 370.
