Fish has always boasted one of the more memorable names in tennis but is now carving out a reputation for his game.

In 2003, he became America's number three, behind Andy Roddick and Andre Agassi, after reaching three finals and claiming his first title in Stockholm.

He was the only player to take a set off Roger Federer at Wimbledon when the Swiss beat him in the third round.

Federer was on top again when the pair met in the Halle Open final during the build-up to this year's tournament.

Fish was the the first American to reach the final at Halle in Germany.

But he went down 6-0 6-3, marking the latest defeat in the final stage of a tournament.

He lost narrowly to close friend Roddick in both the Siebel Open Final in San Jose earlier this year and the 2003 Cincinnati Masters final.

He was also beaten in finals at Delray Beach and Nottingham last season.
