The 24-year-old has proved something of an underachiever since bursting onto the scene with a final appearance at the Australian Open in 1999. She has yet to return to a Grand Slam final and struggles to impose herself on matches or against the very best.
Most recently at the French Open she wasted a glorious chance to win on home soil when going out in the last eight.
It is time to deliver but her Wimbledon chances will depend on how well she has recovered from that setback.
She has climbed as how as third in the rankings this season after wins on clay in Berlin and Rome.
Her big tournament failures are all the more frustrating as she has the physique and athleticism to match anyone and, at her best, an attacking game that is almost unique in women's tennis.
The problems have largely been of confidence and that has often been exposed at the French Open, where she seems to suffer from the burden of home expectation and has a relatively poor record.
On that front Wimbledon is different and she could prosper if her showing on her last appearance - a semi-final appearance - is any guide.
