Anastasia Myskina

4th round (2003)

The Russian 22-year-old made the jump from consistent tour pro to Grand Slam winner at the French Open.

She saw off Venus Williams and Jennifer Capriati before beating compatriot Elena Dementieva in a one-sided final.

As a result her world ranking is on the rise and, after a solid 12 months, is firmly established in the top five.

If Myskina is to challenge the best at Wimbledon she will have to improve a poor SW19 record where she has never progressed to the last eight.

The Roland Garros win was the eighth of her career and the second of her year after she successfully retained her Doha title in March.

Like most of her fellow Russians, Myskina has a tidy game from the back of the court, and also boasts a neat touch at the net.

As well as struggling on grass, she also has a poor record against the best, and strongest, players in the game.

But in Paris it all came together as she not only put a woeful French Open record behind her, but she also saw off some of those same heavy hitters who have troubled her in the past.
