Born in Canada, Pierce struggled to convince her adopted nation that she was a true Frenchwoman - until 2000.

She had already won a Grand Slam title in Australia, but beating Monica Seles, Martina Hingis and Conchita Martinez to win the French Open made her a legend.

With two Grand Slams and 15 other tournament wins, Pierce has achieved a great deal in 15 years on the tour.

But she has endured a miserable time with injury since winning the French Open four years ago.

She missed the last seven months of 2002 with a back injury and was hampered by a series of ailments last season, although the year ended on a high note as France won the Fed Cup.

Pierce started 2004 with arun to the Paris final where she lost to Kim Clijsters.

It hinted at a rejuvenation but in the clay-court season she managed just four wins from nine matches culminating at Roland Garros, where after looking good she came off second best to Venus Williams in the third round.
