After establishing herself as the world number one in doubles, Suarez turned her attention to singles in 2003.

The 27-year-old won her third career singles title in Vienna and reached the US Open quarter-finals.

She still thrived with doubles partner Virginia Ruano Pascual to win the US Open and end up runner-up in the remaining three Grand Slams.

But the pinnacle of her singles career came when she reached the semi-finals of the French Open last month.

She lost to Elena Dementieva in the last four, having already classily dispatched of Dementieva's countrywoman Maria Sharapova.

But Roland Garros was no one-off.

The Argentine has claimed a title in Canberra and reached the final in Berlin where she lost to Venus Williams.

Last year she impressed at Wimbledon, reaching the fourth round, and, on current form, could go one better.
