After 14 years on the tour it is no surprise that Chanda Rubin is showing signs of wear and tear. She withdrew from Indian Wells earlier in the year with a recurrence of a knee injury that has frequently hit her.
The 28-year-old made her Grand Slam debut at the 1990 US Open and climbed to a top-10 place in 1996.
When fit she is more of a contender now than at any stage of her career and she enjoyed a superb season in 2003, taking titles in Madrid and Eastbourne.
And before her knee flared up she made a solid start to 2004, reaching the last 16 at the Australian Open and the semi-finals in Tokyo.
Rubin has an all-court game that can trouble anyone but needs to improve her Grand Slam record, with a solitary semi-final appearance at the Australian Open in 1996.
