At just 19 years old, Zvonareva is part of a second wave of Russian talent, along with Svetlana Kuznetsova and Maria Sharapova. They are already putting pressure on elder compatriots such as Anastasia Myskina and Elena Dementieva.
Her win over Venus Williams in the fourth round of last year's French Open brought her to world attention.
Williams avenged the loss at Wimbledon afterwards, but Zvonareva's appearance on the last 16 on grass was impressive.
She won her second career title indoors in Memphis in February, and has made another semi-final and two quarters.
Defeats to Venus Williams (twice), Lindsay Davenport and Justine Henin-Hardenne this year suggest it takes the very best to stop her.
