Elena Dementieva is a major part of the Russian revolution in women's tennis, but her game in Roland Garros shows there is still work to be done. She stunned favourite Amelie Mauresmo in the quarter-finals and was similarly impressive in the last four against Paola Suarez.
But she could not repeat that in the final against countrywoman Anastasia Myskina to whom she lost 6-1 6-2.
She will have to put that tearful loss behind her if she is to prosper.
After seemingly establishing herself in the world's top 10 in 2003, Dementieva had struggled to hold on to her place this year before the French Open.
The 22-year-old burst onto the scene in 2000, finishing the year 12th in the world after reaching the US Open semi-finals and winning a silver medal at the Olympics.
However, the following two seasons proved disappointing and it was not until Amelia Island last April that she won her first tour title.
She ended 2003 strongly and looked set to go further this year, but struggled to recover fully from a first-round loss to Jelena Jankovic at the Australian Open until her trip to Paris.
