Like her sister, Venus missed the second half of 2003 after picking up an abdominal injury at Wimbledon, and she remains on the comeback trail.

By the time of her defeat in the final last year, the former world number one was looking an increasingly distracted figure on court.

A succession of Grand Slam final defeats to Serena has removed the aura of invincibility she once had.

But SW19, where she has won twice, is one of her happier hunting grounds.

Whether she can recapture her form remains to be seen, as she has made hard work of some relatively average opponents.

She has picked up two tour titles this year and reached the quarter-finals at Roland Garros before she lost in straight sets to Anastasia Myskina, the eventual champion.
