16. Jiri Novak
Jiri Novak
Born: 22/3/75
Nationality: Czech
Seeded: 16
World ranking: 16
Wimbledon best:
3rd round (2003)
Recent record:
2003: 3rd round
2002: 2nd round
2001: 2nd round
Novak has established himself in the world's top 15 over the last two years as his career continues to flourish in its latter stages.

In 2003 he did not quite manage to maintain the number five ranking he reached the previous season.

But he is still one of the most consistent performers on the circuit.

Whether he can be a Grand Slam winner is questionable, and it is telling that he did not win a tournament in 2002 despite it being his best-ever year.

Last season the Czech managed to pick up his fifth career title, beating the newly-crowned Wimbledon champion Roger Federer in Gstaad in June.

He has a solid, if unspectacular game, that is best suited to hard courts so it is hardly surprising that his best Wimbledon showing is a third-round appearance last year.

It is unlikely he will get much further in 2004.
