Little over a year ago, Massu was playing Challenger tournaments in a bid to find form and improve his ranking. Now, he finds himself seeded for Wimbledon after a stunning second half of last season.
The turnaround in fortunes began in July when he won the Amersfoort clay-court tournament in Holland and then reached the final in Kitzbuhel.
Another title came in September, again on clay, and he was dangerous at the Madrid Masters' hard-courts.
The Chilean stunned Andy Roddick in the third round on his magnificent run to the final - where he was edged out in three sets by Juan Carlos Ferrero.
A consistent hitter from the back of the court, the 24-year-old has not had the best of times in 2004 but he boosted his confidence with a quarter-final appearance at the Rome Masters on clay.
The challenge for Massu now is to hang on to his place in the top 20, which was not helped by his exit in the third round of the French Open.
He may find the going tough at Wimbledon as well.
