Keothavong remains in the doubles event |
Anne Keothavong bowed out of the Danish Open women's singles competition after she was defeated 4-6 6-0 6-4 by sixth seed Polona Hercog of Slovenia. Keothavong began well, breaking Hercog twice as she took the first set. But the 26-year-old suffered badly in the next, winning only 40% of her first service points as Hercog broke on all three opportunities that came her way. Keothavong was then broken in the 10th game of the final set which brought an end to her singles campaign. However, the Londoner remains in the doubles tournament along with partner Anna Smith following the pair's win over Malou Ejdesgard and Caroline Wozniacki in Wednesday's quarter-final match. Keothavong said: "I started off incredibly well in today's match, it was just unfortunate I couldn't keep it up. Polona played smart and used her serve well. "I can take a bit of confidence from the singles matches I've had here this week. "There's been a slight improvement compared to how I've been playing the last few weeks and I hope I can build on it." In the Thursday's other second round matches, Danish top seed Caroline Wozniacki survived a scare against Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic before winning 4-6 6-2 6-0. Wozniacki was broken five times in the first set, where only one of the games went with serve. But the world number three then found her stride and her serve, adding two breaks in the second set and three in the third. Wozniacki will face fifth-seeded Julia Goerges of Germany for a place in the semi-finals. Russia's Anna Chakvetadze beat compatriot Anna Lapushchenkova 6-3 6-4, while Romanian Sorana Cirstea recorded a 7-5 4-6 6-2 victory over Slovenia's Katarina Srebotnik.
