Elena Baltacha failed to build on her win over top seed Francesca Schiavone as she lost 6-4 6-0 to Andrea Petkovic in the last eight of the Istanbul Cup.

Baltacha, 26, was broken six times and won 54% of her first service points.

German Petkovic will face Elena Vesnina in the semi-finals after the Russian defeated Anastasia Rodionova 7-5 6-1.

Third seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia overcame Romania's Sorana Cirstea 6-4 6-2 to set up a clash with Australian Jarmila Groth.

Groth reached the last four with a 7-5 6-2 victory over Vera Dushevina.

British number one Baltacha lost the first three games in the opening set against Petkovic before levelling at 4-4.

But the Scot failed to hold serve again, losing the set before she was soundly beaten in the second.

Baltacha later said on her Twitter page: "Petkovic played very well. My serve let me down big time but on the whole [it was] another top-10 win, 70 points banked and another quarter-final so it was a positive week."
