Watson was the first British girl to win the US Junior Open |
Heather Watson is through to the second round of the Aegon Pro Series in Barnstaple, whilst fellow Briton Laura Robson has crashed out. Watson, 17, defeated Mel South 7-6 6-2 in the first round, with Robson, 15, losing 6-4 7-6 to Naomi Cavaday. Watson, who is ranked over 500 places below South in women's singles, will now face Kristina Mladevnovic. Cavaday's win over Robson means that she will now take on Russian Ksenia Pervak in round two. Robson, who was the Junior Wimbledon champion in 2008, remained philosophical after the defeat and said she will take many positives from the encounter with Cavaday. "She hits it really hard and it's quite an awkward shot to return because I'm not used to playing left handers. | I thought it was a solid match and I thought she played really well. |
"I thought my performance was good," Robson said. "It could have been better on how many mistakes I made and how many first serves I made, but I thought it was a solid match and I thought she played really well." Cavaday knows that Pervak will provide even stiffer competition for her in the next round. The 18-year-old Russian is the number one seed in the tournament and is presently ranked at 137 in the world. Cavaday said: "I'm really looking forward to my next match, I have some things I want to work on. "It was a good performance today but I know I will have to play better than that tomorrow [Thursday]."
