Clayton beat Plamen Mitev in three sets in Bulgaria |
Jersey teenager Scott Clayton won Tennis Europe's Dema Cup in Sofia, Bulgaria on Saturday. The 15-year-old defeated number six seed Plamen Mitev, of Bulgaria, 6-0 1-6 7-6, winning the decisive third set 7-2 in the tiebreak. Clayton told BBC Radio Jersey he was not expecting to do as well as he did. "My goal was to just make it past the first round, but I kept playing well and thought I could do alright, but I never thought I was going to win it." Clayton, who came through qualifying to make the main draw, then defeated a host of higher ranked players to make it into the final. | I had a great tiebreak and led 6-0 and from there I wouldn't let it slip |
He easily won the opening set of the final to love, only for the Bulgarian to fight back and level the match. The third set was an epic battle that had to be decided on a tiebreak that Clayton easily won. "It was quite tense in the third as we both dropped a serve, but I had a great tiebreak and lead 6-0 and from there I wouldn't let it slip," he said. Clayton is now focussing on the Jersey Open, which begins on 26 July.
