McCluskey and Ogier have now won gold at the Island Games three times |
The Guernsey men's tennis team have successfully defended their gold medal at the Island Games in Aland. Dom McCluskey and Patrick Ogier beat Menorca in their semi-finals before both going on to claim wins over the Cayman Islands in the team event. McCluskey beat Eduardo Torres 6-3 4-6 10-3 in his final, whilst Ogier triumphed over Mica Koll, 6-3 6-3. The team were seeded first in the competition and have now won the gold medal three times in a row. McCluskey described their semi-final win over Menorca as an "absolute marathon' that spurred the team on. The 19-year-old told BBC Radio Guernsey that the understanding between the pair was vital to their win. He said: "We've know each other for years so we know how each other plays. "We also play a lot of doubles together so we're good at supporting each other and knowing when one of us is down and we have to pick them up." Ogier said: "We actually played the Cayman Islands four years ago and beat them in the final then to win the gold."
