Lowndes picks up two pool medals

Swimmer Ben Lowndes has won Guernsey's first gold medal of the 2009 Island Games in Aland.

The 23-year-old won the 200m butterfly final in a time of 2 minutes 2:20 seconds, beating fellow Guernsey swimmer Ian Hubert into second place.

Hubert, 25, finished just over three seconds behind Lowndes as Guernsey's men dominated on day one in the pool.

Lowndes also won bronze in the 50m backstroke, completing a length of the pool in 27.23 seconds.

Further swimming medals came from Jonathan Le Nuory, 25, who won bronze in the men's 1,500m freestyle.

Le Nuroy was beaten into third place by Jersey's John Gallichan who claimed the silver medal with Pal Joensen from the Faroe Islands winning gold.

There was also a bronze for Jeremy Osborne in the men's 200m individual medley.

Osborne finished behind Pal Joensen from the Faroe Islands and Jersey's Ian Black, who won the race in 2:03.90.
