CI men win winter counties group

The Channel Islands men's team won all three matches in their group

The Channel Islands men's tennis team won the Winter County Cup in Preston at the weekend, securing promotion from Group 6A for next year.

The men won all three matches in their group, each match comprising six singles and three doubles rubbers.

"The younger players have really stepped up," said performance officer and men's captain Andrew Evans.

"This is what it's all for: giving them the experience to play tough matches," he added.

Group 6A of the county competition included Northamptonshire, Cumbria and Avon.

Evans was particularly pleased to win the third match against Avon.

"We lost to them in the Summer County week," he said. "But our junior boys really pulled us through - James Feudermer had a great couple days, as did Charlie Cohen and James Connolly."

Unfortunately, it was a tough weekend for the Channel Islands ladies at their equivalent event in Glasgow.

They lost their first two matches 9-0 to West of Scotland and East of Scotland, before completing a frustrating weekend with a 7-2 defeat by Herefordshire and Worcestershire.
