Despite accusations that he was a 'choker', Henman proved to be an outstanding performer in the intensity of the Davis Cup, winning 38 of his 52 matches.
In 1998, he and Greg Rusedski led Britain into the elite World Group. Much to their regret, a win at that level eluded them. The closest they came was in 1999 against the US when Rusedski lost the decider in five sets.
Henman, wary of his aching body and advancing years, announced his Davis Cup retirement in 2004, only to be tempted back into action by captain John Lloyd in 2007. "Some of the best memories of my career have come from the Davis Cup," he reasoned.
