Henman was a relative veteran of 21 before he broke through on the professional scene. In 1995, he won his first Grand Slam match - beating Kenyan Paul Wekesa at Wimbledon before losing to Pete Sampras.
A year later, Henman hit the world's top 30 after reaching seven ATP semi-finals and teamed up with Neil Broad to win silver at the Atlanta Olympics - Britain's first medal in tennis since 1924.
That was the year Henman also became British number one, overtaking Greg Rusedski. He would go on to hold that position for 10 years until February 2006 when he was finally toppled by teenager Andy Murray.
