British number one Tim Henman swept aside Wayne Arthurs 6-1 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals at the Indian Wells Masters Series tournament. The ninth seed returned superbly in the first set, breaking Arthurs' usually reliable serve three times.
A double fault at the start of the second saw Henman drop his serve but he hit back immediately, thanks to a dubious line call which upset Arthurs.
The Australian was rattled and Henman broke once more before sealing victory.
He will now play third seed Andy Roddick, who made just nine unforced errors en route to a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Nicolas Escude.
Henman was delighted with his performance, particularly his return of serve.
"To break Wayne in the first game was a boost for me and it frustrated him," he said.
"As the match went on I just returned better and better and kept the pressure on him. To break someone of Wayne's calibre five times has got to be a good thing.
"I felt I was serving well and to win 6-1 6-3 against him is good for the confidence."
