Third seed Andy Roddick had a similarly easy time as he beat fellow American Jan-Michael Gambill 7-6 (7-3) 6-2.
Roddick will play Marat Safin in the next round after the Russian beat Czech qualifier Jan Hernych 6-4 7-6.
"I don't think it's a great draw for me, but at the same time, its probably not a good draw for him either," Roddick said.
Seventh seed Carlos Moya of Spain is out, however, after he double faulted on match point and fell to Russian Irakli Labadze 2-6 6-1 6-3.
Chile's Fernando Gonzalez beat Victor Hanescu of Romania despite getting sick in his three-set match in the 34C heat.
There were also wins on Sunday for Spain's Rafael Nadal, Max Mirnyi of Belarus and France's Sebastien Grosjean.
