Federer crushes Pavel

World number one Roger Federer crushed Andrei Pavel to reach the third round of the Pacific Life Masters Series event in Indian Wells.

It was the top seed's fourth win over Pavel this year, and moved his 2004 record to 17 wins and one defeat.

Third seed Andy Roddick had a similarly easy time as he beat fellow American Jan-Michael Gambill 7-6 (7-3) 6-2.

Roddick will play Marat Safin in the next round after the Russian beat Czech qualifier Jan Hernych 6-4 7-6.

"I don't think it's a great draw for me, but at the same time, its probably not a good draw for him either," Roddick said.

Seventh seed Carlos Moya of Spain is out, however, after he double faulted on match point and fell to Russian Irakli Labadze 2-6 6-1 6-3.

Chile's Fernando Gonzalez beat Victor Hanescu of Romania despite getting sick in his three-set match in the 34C heat.

There were also wins on Sunday for Spain's Rafael Nadal, Max Mirnyi of Belarus and France's Sebastien Grosjean.
