Former world number two Tommy Haas continued his comeback from injury with victory over Sweden's Thomas Enqvist at the Pacific Life Open at Indian Wells. The 25-year-old German won 6-4 3-6 6-3 against his fellow wild card.
Haas, who has won five ATP titles to date, will next Thai face 10th seed Paradorn Srichaphan in the second round of the Masters Series event.
There were also wins for Spain's David Sanchez, Mikhail Youzhny of Russia and Argentina's Guillermo Canas.
It was Haas' first win of 2004 after first-round losses in San Jose and Memphis on his return from undergoing two shoulder operations in the past 14 months.
"It is like a second start for me," said Haas. "I am happy the shoulder is holding up.
"Last year was very frustrating, but I am really glad to be back and finding my game again."
