Goran Ivanisevic made a victorious return after eight months out with a dramatic win over Bodhan Ulihrach at the Milan Indoors. The Croat won 7-6 (7-2) 3-6 7-6 (7-3) to set up a second-round meeting with Spain's Tommy Robredo.
"Today I really surprised myself and perhaps also my opponent," said Ivanisevic.
"I served very well and nothing hurts, I feel no pain. I played good, especially in the tie breaks."
He added: "I have no goals for this season but to have fun.
"I really want to enjoy staying on the court and fight for points."
Ivanisevic had not played since his first-round defeat at the Stella Artois Championships last June.
He has been hindered by a shoulder injury and elbow and knee problems.
Top seed Jiri Novak was forced to pull out before his match with Raemon Sluiter, suffering from a calf injury.
Thomas Johansson continued his own comeback from injury with a 6-3 6-4 victory over Nikolay Davydenko.
"I'm satisfied with my play today, especially with my serve," said the 2002 Australian Open champion.
"Every match is very important for me."
Mario Ancic of Croatia beat Frenchman Fabrice Santoro 6-2 6-3 and goes on to face Ivo Karlovic or Rafael Nadal.
Third seed Robredo saw off comaptriot Alex Corretja 6-4 7-5.
