Serena strolls through
Serena Williams
Williams was in dominant form in Paris
Wednesday's WTA round-up

Paris Indoor Open

Serena Williams, back on court for the first time since winning her fourth straight Grand Slam title, eased past Myriam Casanova in Paris.

Days after beating her sister Venus at the Australian Open, Serena outclassed her Swiss opponent to prevail 6-0 6-4 in 59 minutes.

In earlier action, second seed Daniela Hantuchova sped into the last eight with a 6-3 6-3 win over Slovenian Maja Matevzic.

The Slovak world number five was in solid form at the $585,000 (400,000) event as she set up a match against either Italy's Rita Grande or Russia's Elena Dementieva.

Spaniard Magui Serna, meanwhile, battled past French hope Stephanie Cohen Aloro in three gruelling sets.

The 23-year-old prevailed 7-6 (7/3) 6-7 (2/7) 6-3 and will now meet either French third seed Amelie Mauresmo or Japan's Ai Sugiyama.

Teenage star Cohen Aloro pulled off the upset of the tournament to oust seventh-seed Anna Pistolesi, of Israel, in the first round.

But she lost her nerve while in a winning position to allow Serna to progress.

"I have more experience than her and I had the confidence. I had no doubt that I could win that match," said Serna afterwards.

Indian Open

Sixteen-year-old qualifier Maria Kirilenko, of Russia, saved five match points in the second set before ousting Indonesian seventh seed Angelique Widjaja 5-7 7-5 6-3.

There were nine service breaks in the second set, but Kirilenko held her serves in the 10th and 12th games to claim take it.

She will now take on second-seeded Thai Tamarine Tanasugarn, who carved out an easy 6-3, 6-3 victory over Tatiana Poutchek, of Belarus.

In other second-round matches, fifth seed Iroda Tulyaganovo beat Swaori Obata, while Mary Pierce, seeded fourth, romped past Evie Dominikovic.
