Pisnik shocks Schnyder

Tuesday's WTA round-up

Paris Indoor Open

Switzerland's Patty Schnyder joined the ranks of seeds to tumble in the first round of the $585,000 Paris Indoor Open.

The fifth-seeded Schnyder suffered a surprise 6-3 6-3 reversal at the hands of Slovenia's Tina Pisnik.

Earlier, Silvia Farina Elia, the sixth seed, was dumped by fellow Italian Rita Grande.

That came after French wild card Stephanie Cohen Aloro ousted seventh-seeded Israeli Anna Smashnova-Pistolesi 6-3 6-2 on Monday.

Schnyder, ranked 13th in the world, looked out of sorts in her first meeting against world number 61 Pisnik.

She saved two set points at 5-1 down, but was unable to fight back and Pisnik wrapped up the set in 33 minutes.

The Slovenian then broke Schnyder's serve in the sixth game of the second to take the match.

She will now play the winner of the match between Slovak Janette Husarova and German Greta Arn.

Farina Elia, ranked 17th in the world, suffered a three-set loss to Grande, ranked 63rd.

Grande, 27, fought off a late come-back by the 30-year-old Farina Elia before winning through 6-3 1-6 7-5.

In the late games, Switzerland's Myriam Casanova beat Barbara Schett of Austria 4-6 7-5 6-3, while Greece's Eleni Daniilidou swept past American Alexandra Stevenson 6-3 7-5.

Top seed Serena Williams of the United States will take to court midweek.

Her main challengers are expected to be Slovak Daniela Hantuchova and France's Amelie Mauresmo, seeded second and third respectively.

However, a groin injury could force Mauresmo to pull out of her second round match against Japan's Ai Sugiyama on Thursday.

The problem has prevented her from playing this season and she is expected to make a decision on her fitness on Wednesday.

Indian Open

Unfancied Akiko Morigami of Japan shocked top seed Clarisa Fernandez of Argentina 6-2 6-4 in the first round of the Indian Open in Hyderabad.

Morigami, ranked 128th in the world, played a steady game to down the 29th-ranked Fernandez.

Third seed Elena Likhovtseva of Russia, the world's 37th-ranked player, also fell at the first hurdle as she lost 6-2 6-3 to Israel's Tzipora Oblizer.

Second seed Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand and fourth seed Mary Pierce of France were stretched to three sets before advancing into the second round.
