Mathieu claims shock win
Paul-Henri Mathieu
Mathieu picked up $133,00 for winning the tournament
French qualifier Paul-Henri Mathieu produced a stunning comeback to claim the Kremlin Cup with victory over Sjeng Schalken.

Mathieu beat his Dutch opponent 4-6 6-2 6-0 to win his first ATP Tour title in his first final.

He said: "I'd like to thank Moscow's public for their support, they were really terrific. I've managed to win my first title in Moscow and I'm really happy I came here to play.

"I hope to come back next year to defend my title and I'm hoping the local public will support me again," he added.

The 20-year-old Mathieu started badly against the seventh seed, losing his serve in the opening game of the match.

Schalken, who is ranked 20 in the ATP race, held firm in the face of some aggressive play from Mathieu to win the first set in 42 minutes.

In the second set Mathieu raced to a 3-0 lead with an early break before cruising to victory to bring the scores level after a further 30 minutes of play.

The Frenchman then increased the tempo, breaking Schalken to win the set at love and the match after 1hr 38 min on court.
