| Sunday, 6 October, 2002, 12:10 GMT 13:10 UK Maleeva clinches Cup ![]() Maleeva has beaten three top 10 players this week Magdalena Maleeva continued her week of giant-killing by beating Lindsay Davenport to win the Kremlin Cup in Moscow. The unseeded Bulgarian beat second seed Davenport 5-7 6-3 7-6 (7-4) to claim the title for the third time. The 27-year-old had already despatched top seed Venus Williams and fourth seed Amelie Mauresmo earlier in the tournament.
Against Davenport, the world number 23 lost the first set after 42 minutes but secured the only break in the second to level the match. Maleeva broke in the first game of the final set but Davenport hit straight back. The match went to a deciding tiebreak, where Maleeva's precision of shot was rewarded and she claimed her first title of the season and her first in Moscow since 1995. Davenport, who has missed much of the season with a knee injury, was also looking for her first title of the year. But the American continually struggled to hold serve despite banging down 15 aces and Maleeva took full advantage. |
