Australian Open champion Thomas Johansson has crashed out of the Kremlin Cup in the first round. The number six seed was edged out of a tight contest by Bohdan Ulihrach 7-6 7-6 to continue his dire run against the Czech player. Afterwards he conceded: "Actually, it was the toughest match I've ever had with Ulihrach and I have never beaten him." Johansson was in form from the outset despite having not played on the men's tour since July because of a sore right shoulder. He looked to have turned the tide in the opening set, having recovered from a break down at 5-4 to take the opener to a tiebreak. But Ulihrach once again move into control, winning the tiebreak 7-5. Coasted The Czech player was even more at ease in the second tie-break, winning it with the loss of just two points. There were no such problems for top seed Marat Safin, who beat Brazilian Fernando Meligeni 6-4 7-6. Fifth seed Roger Federer, of Switzerland, also coasted into the second round after overwhelming Russia's Denis Golovanov 6-0 6-1 in just 38 minutes. The other upset of the day came in the women's draw, as third seed Jelena Dokic went down 7-6 3-6 6-3 to Amanda Coetzer. In the early matches, fifth-seeded Amelie Mauresmo eliminated Russian Tatiana Panova in straight sets 6-4 6-3. And Spain's Magui Serna of Spain ousted Paola Suarez of Argentina 6-2 2-6 6-2 in her first-round tie. Meanwhile Anna Kournikova may have to pull out of Thursday's second round match against fellow Russian Nadia Petrova. Kournikova withdrew from her quarter-final doubles match on Wednesday after spraining her left ankle. She was playing with Meghann Shaughnessy against Dokic and Petrova but retired at the start of the final set and that has left a doubt hanging over her participation in the singles. |
