Scotland are hoping to sign Indian vice-captain Rahul Dravid to play for them when they make their debut in England's one-day Norwich Union League next summer.

Gwynne Jones, chief executive of Scottish Cricket Limited, spoke to Dravid during last week's third Test between England and India at Headingley.

They decided to turn to him after an initial approach to teammate Sachin Tendulkar was rejected and hope to talk to him again in October.

"We had preliminary discussions and Rahul gave some very encouraging signs.

"He sees the prospect of playing about 20 games for Scotland as much more appealing than a hard slog on the county scene," Jones commented.

Prolific scorer

Dravid is one of the top batsmen in world cricket, having scored 4,575 Test runs and 5,343 in one-day internationals.

He scored 148 during the Headingley Test, paving the way for India's big first innings total of 628 for eight declared. They went on to win the game by an innings and 48 runs.

Scotland have been admitted to the Norwich Union League on a three-year trial basis.

They have previously taken part in the B&H Cup but that competition came to an end earlier this summer, to be replaced by a new 20-over competition.
