Jake Abbott scored two tries against Olympic Rugby Madrid last season |
Worcester Warriors flanker Jake Abbott has signed a new one-year contract with the relegated Championship club. The England sevens star, 22, a product of the club's youth set-up, says he had had no intention of leaving Sixways. "It is late on and we are coming up to pre-season now so it is a relief to get it all sorted," he told BBC Hereford & Worcester. "I love Worcester and I am very happy to stay so it is good to get it all finalised," added Abbott. Having been with the club since the age of six as a mini and junior, Abbott has become one of the rising stars at Sixways in recent seasons. The 22-year-old made his first senior start against London Irish in the EDF Energy Cup in October 2008, scoring his first try for the club against Harlequins in the same competition a month later. "I was on a one-year deal last year and now I have signed another one so I am happy," he told BBC Hereford and Worcester. | It is a proving ground for me and a chance to try and work myself up the ladder |
"My career is progressing at a pace I am happy with although obviously you always want things to go better. "I think people think playing sport is an easy job but when it gets to contract time every year you are trying to impress to push on," he added. Abbott is hoping that the arrival of new head coach Richard Hill will offer the chance to impress. "I spoke to him yesterday for the first time," said Abbott, "although I haven't yet had a chance to shake his hand. "It is a clean slate and he has brought in new backroom staff and some new players coming in. "He has brought in the likes of Alex Crockett and Rob Higgitt and there is some good competition in the back row as well, with the likes of Neil Best coming in. "I take every season as a clean slate and I hope the coaches will so it is a proving ground for me and a chance to try and work myself up the ladder."
