Mallinder hopes to continue their good pre-season start

Northampton director of rugby Jim Mallinder has said first-team places are up for grabs ahead of their pre-season double-header this weekend.

The Saints face Championship sides Bedford Blues and Rotherham Titans on Friday and Saturday at home.

Mallinder told the club's website: "Every place in the first team is up for grabs for our opening league match against Worcester on 6 September.

"We'll get good workouts from two good Championship outfits this weekend."

Saints began their pre-season campaign last Thursday with a win against Bordeaux in Capbreton, and will hope to demonstrate their Premiership credentials against local rivals Bedford and the Titans.

"Last week's match in France was a useful exercise and this weekend we will have more opportunities to see the players in action," added Mallinder.
