Jack Brooks took four wickets on his County Championship debut to give Northants the advantage over Derbyshire on the first day at Chesterfield.

Seamer Brooks (4-76) was backed up by Johannes van der Wath (3-92) as the hosts were bowled out for 255.

Derbyshire's main resistance came from Garry Park (55) and Jamie Pipe, who plundered 58 from 34 deliveries.

The visitors then reached 137-3 at the close, Rob White smashing 62 from 56 balls, to trail by 118 runs.

After the hosts won the toss, openers Chris Rogers and Wayne Madsen put on 47, only to fall in quick succession.

Park and Greg Smith (25) then combined to take the score to 108-2. But, when Smith was caught at point off the bowling of Andrew Hall, it sparked a collapse which saw the home side lose their last eight wickets for 147 runs.

Wavell Hinds and Dan Redfern were removed in successive van der Wath overs. And, despite Pipe's thrilling counter-attack, Brooks and David Lucas (2-56) combined to mop up the tail.

Northants openers Stephen Peters (39) and Niall O'Brien then shared a stand of 49, ended when Tim Groenewald had the Irish wicketkeeper caught behind.

This was the cue for White's onslaught as he and Peters added 89 for the second wicket in 15 overs.

But both White and Peters fell before the close, trapped lbw by Groenewald and Hinds respectively, leaving Lucas and Alex Wakely to see Northants to the end of the day.
