Jones, 30, had been heavily linked with a move to French club Biarritz after triggering a clause in his contract allowing him to talk to other clubs.

"There were some hugely tempting offers from other high-quality clubs," said Jones.

"The Llanelli Scarlets mean an incredible amount to me."

Scarlets chief executive told BBC Wales Sport: "Players of Stephen's calibre don't come along too often so, as a region, we put a great deal of effort into retaining his services.

"We gave him and his representatives time to look at offers and at the same time, entered into dialogue with him to stay.

"Obviously we are delighted and Stephen is relieved that it's all been put to bed and his future is secured."

Jones re-joined the Scarlets in the summer of 2006 after spending two seasons with French club Clermont Auvergne.

His current deal contained a clause allowing him to look for other offers this month, which he triggered.

And last week, Gallacher told BBC Wales Sport that Jones was currently holding talks with other clubs over a possible move.

His decision to consider a move from Stradey Park emerged just two days after the Scarlets announced that scrum-half Dwayne Peel has agreed to join Sale Sharks at the end of the season.

Rumours of unrest quickly spread about others in the Scarlets squad, with Regan King and Alix Popham linked with other clubs.

This prompted Gallacher to deny claims of a crisis between the players and director of rugby Phil Davies.

But speculation over King's future ended on Wednesday when the centre signed a new three-year contract, and Gallacher revealed he is working on singing new players this week.

"I'm discussing with agents to see what we can deliver to strengthen the team," said Gallacher.

"You need a squad of depth and quality to go forward in today's game and it's very competitive. Quality players are sought after by many, many various clubs, provinces and regions so it's not easy.

"That's why were are very pleased that someone of Regan's quality does commit to us."
