England's Mike Tindall will undergo surgery on a foot injury on Wednesday and will miss the Six Nations. The Bath centre, who also has a hand problem, took the decision following a second opinion and will be out until at least mid-April.
He cracked a bone at the top of his second toe in a Heineken Cup match against Leinster at the end of October.
Tindall returned to action briefly only for the problem to flare up again in England's November Tests.
His place in the England side will be taken by 18-year-old Newcastle centre Mathew Tait, while Falcons' team-mate Jamie Noon will play in place of Tindall's injured midfield partner Will Greenwood.
