There is a hell of a lot of disappointment following the loss to Italy - we've hit a very low point but the key is to bounce back. Unfortunately, things didn't go well for us on Saturday; we found the game very difficult. There were a lot of sad faces in the dressing room after the game but we can't feel sorry for ourselves. We have all played in Test matches that we have lost, all played in Test matches that we have won.
What we must do now is come together. We need to analyse things and improve for next week's game against England. There is a huge mountain in front of us. It is difficult when you come off a defeat like Italy to try and build yourself up for a very difficult game. But I am sure that the 22 men that the management picks to wear the jersey next week, will do the best they can to turn things around.
Throughout the game, I tried to prove that they were justified in retaining me as captain as well as retaining my place in the side. If Steve Hansen thinks that I am not the right person for the job then so be it. I am not one to argue, all I'll do is get behind the rest of the squad whether I'm on the field or not. I must give credit to the Italians. They showed a great deal of tenacity and came through at the end showing that they were the stronger team. A lot of people may have touted Italy as the weakest nation in the Six Nations, but the players in the dressing room after the game will disagree.
They showed how well they can play and how much they have improved over the last couple of years. I think that it was a case of fortune favouring the brave and that's why they won on Saturday. It is very difficult to explain where we went wrong. We didn't win as much ball as we had hoped for. Unfortunately for us the Italians did win ball, they plugged away, showed how strong their defence is and that's how they won their points. We have now got to use the next six days to try and turn things around. We have got to stick together, bounce back and not feel sorry for ourselves. |
