Springboks maul Pumas

South Africa 49-29 Argentina

South Africa stepped up their preparations for the forthcoming Tri Nations series with a handsome six-try victory over Argentina in Springs.

The Springboks showed a marked improvement on their lacklustre series win over Wales to hold off an experienced Pumas side at the PAM Brink Stadium.

South Africa captain Corne Krige

Wing Stefan Terblanche led the way with a brace of tries but fly-half Andre Pretorius took the plaudits with a 24-point personal haul featuring his first Test try.

The South African backs looked far more threatening than of late and there were further scores for centre Adrian Jacobs and both scrum-halves, Craig Davidson and Johanes Conradie.

  Scoreboard:
South Africa:
Tries: Jacobs, Davidson, Terblanche 2, Pretorius, Conradie
Cons: Pretorius 5
Pens: Pretorius 3
Argentina:
Tries: Lobbe, Penalty
Cons: Quesada 2
Pens: Quesada 5

A purple five-minute patch at the end of the first quarter produced a 17-0 lead, but the boot of Gonzalo Quesada kept the Pumas in touch until the closing minutes.

The visitors dominated possession early on, but failed to capitalise when Quesada twice sent penalty attempts wide in the opening seven minutes.

Pretorius might already have given South Africa the lead when the ball squeezed from his grasp over the Pumas line, before he opened the scoring with a penalty after 19 minutes.

That was the cue for a Springboks blitz which resulted in two tries inside three minutes.

Jacobs, one of four changes to the side that beat Wales two weeks ago, seized his opportunity in style.

Davidson started the move with a hanging box kick, and the alert Terblanche, Bob Skinstad and Pretorius combined to send Jacobs sprinting 40 metres to the left corner.

Pretorius converted and added the extras again when good work from lock Jannes Labuschagne and hooker James Dalton allowed Davidson to dive over from close range.

But Argentina responded impressively to reduce the deficit to just four points at half-time.

Lock Fernandez Lobbe took a pass from Agustin Pichot to plough over for a try converted by Quesada, who added two more penalties before the interval.

His third on the resumption brought the Pumas to within a point, but South Africa quickly regained the ascendancy when Terblanche's superb angled run earned the wing his first score.

We made too many mistakes in possession and the Springboks were worthy winners

Pretorius converted and added two more penalties to take South Africa out to 30-16, but Quesada replied with two more penalties.

Pretorius effectively sealed victory with 15 minutes left though with his first Test try, although the Pumas earned a penalty try from a deliberate obstruction moments later.

But Terblanche's second score with eight minutes left, created by Pretorius, allowed the Springboks to play out time in relative comfort.

Conradie, on as a replacement for Davidson, completed a satisfying day for South Africa with the sixth try in the final minute.
