| Saturday, 11 January, 2003, 15:50 GMT Toulouse show their class ![]() Toulouse cruise through to the knockout stages Toulouse 70-18 Newport The inaugural Heineken champions underlined their threat with a free-running display at the Stade Ernest Wallon. Their 10 tries were all converted by scrum-half Jean-Baptiste Elissalde who contributed a total of 25 points. Newport actually took the lead early on with a Jason Strange penalty, but the Frenchmen's slick handling game in the sub-zero temperatures proved too much for the hapless visitors. Toulouse have barely been mentioned as likely Heineken Cup winners this season, but they are now virtually guaranteed a home draw in the quarter-finals and will be one of the teams to beat.
The number 10 got his second just two minutes later as he finished a brilliant length-of-the-field move started by Emile Ntamack. The former French captain then got a try of his own in first-half injury time to leave the score 28-6 at the break.
Flanker Jean Bouilhou sent Toulouse past the 50 mark, before the Black and Ambers finally gained some consolation when number eight Andy Powell grabbed a try. Undaunted, Toulouse winger Vincent Clerc crossed for his team's 10th five-pointer. Newport had the last word with a try from scrum-half Ofisa Tonu'u, but by then the French side's warning shot had rung out loud and clear around the rugby strongholds of Europe.
