Llanelli stayed on course to reach the Heineken Cup quarter-finals by beating Pool 3 rivals Bourgoin 37-22 at Stradey Park on Friday night.

The Scarlets destiny is in their own hands as a win at Glasgow next week will see them through.

A loss however, could allow Bourgoin to sneak back into the lead with a win against Sale, as the French side lead the try count in the two games between themselves and the Welsh champions.

Bourgoin started with the higher tempo and Llanelli spent an uncomfortable first five minutes having to scramble in defence.

But Stephen Jones settled home nerves with a drop-goal after seven minutes when the Scarlets broke out of their own half.

The Wales outside-half followed that with a huge penalty from the halfway line.

Llanelli knew that tries could be vital in the final equation to decide Pool 3, and found a measure of control to threaten the French line with more than Jones' reliable boot.

The tight forwards sucked Bourgoin into a ruck, allowing Matthew Watkins to blast through at the fringe.

The outside centre looked for support and found Scott Quinnell with a full head of steam on his shoulder, popping the pass to allow the former Wales No 8 to charge over from the 22.

Jones' conversion made it 13-0, but the fly-half and Quinnell undid their good work seven minutes later when their muddled communication allowed Bourgoin through for a try.

Alexandre Peclier shot through the gap in the home defence to give centre Glenn Davis an easy score under the posts, with the fly-half also converting.

Davis almost claimed another soon after, but near-namesake Barry Davies raced across to put in a superb cover tackle.

Jones, meanwhile, had added another penalty, then had the joy of another conversion after Davies' intelligent chip was gathered for a try by Garan Evans to make it 23-7 at the break.

Bourgoin drew first blood after the restart, with Peclier chipping a scrappy drop-goal over.

However, Evans claimed his second try as Llanelli hit back straight away with a try.

Bourgoin can feel a little aggrieved as the Scarlets wing looked to have been in touch.

But the touch judge gave Evans the benefit of the doubt and Jones rubbed it in with the conversion.

Bourgoin went back to their forwards and a concerted heave shunted Italian international prop Frederico Pucciariello over for an unconverted try.

Nevertheless, Llanelli were still in control - up until five minutes from time when Wales hooker Robin McBryde was pinged for reckless use of the boot an sin-binned.

Peclier started and finished a dashing move as Bourgoin made full use of the extra man to push the try count firmly in their favour, the fly-half also converting.

Yet with Sale doing both side a huge favour by beating Glasgow 45-3 at Heywood Road, Llanelli's fate is in their own hands when they travel to take on the Scots next week.
