Hull's side have one just twice in 10 games this season |
Bristol coach Paul Hull says their 35-33 defeat at home to bottom-of-the-table Birmingham and Solihull was the lowest point in his career. Bristol looked to have sneaked a win with a penalty try four minutes from time but a last-gasp touchdown for the visitors sealed an unlikely victory. "I reckon this is worst I've felt after a loss," Hull told BBC Radio Bristol. "At home to the bottom team, it speak volumes really. Individual errors cost us once again." Hull continued: "There are team patterns, structure and attack strategies, defensive strategies but it's a hard thing to coach [not making mistakes]. "Sometimes it's just down to concentration levels." But the Bristol coach has taken full responsibility for the defeat, admitting an error in team selection, in a statement on the club website. | I fully believed at the time of selection, that the team that took the field were strong enough to win, regrettably I was wrong |
"Can I take this opportunity to apologize to our supporters for my decision to not field our strongest available team for the game," he said. "I fully believed at the time of selection, that the team that took the field were strong enough to win. Regrettably I was wrong." Bristol led 19-16 at the break and again 26-21 going into the last quarter with tries from Dan Norton and James Merriman could not shake off Birmingham & Solihull. The visitors scored their third try of the match to lead 28-26 with eight minutes left but Paul Hull's side were awarded a penalty try to edge back in front 33-28. But with just seconds left on the clock a cross field kick by Birmingham & Solihull was taken by lock forward Dan Sanderson who dived over to draw level. | We trained hard this week and wanted to prove something to ourselves but fair play to Birmingham they came out played well. |
With the final kick of the match former Bristol fly-half Mark Woodrow converted the try to inflict a painful defeat for last-seasons play-off finalists. Bristol captain Iain Grieve added: "We prepared well this week after getting 40 points on us last week by London Welsh. "We trained hard this week and wanted to prove something to ourselves but fair play to Birmingham they came out played well. "I don't think we took our opportunities when we could have and we let ourselves down in terms of tackling, ball handling and at the break down. "We let them into the game and once you do that their tails went up and they just carried on." Bristol lie in 10th spot in the Championship and face an awkward trip to Plymouth Albion on Friday evening.
