Dave Ward went over for the final try of the game in the 76th minute |
Cornish Pirates claimed their first win in three years over Exeter Chiefs with a comfortable British & Irish Cup triumph at Camborne Recreation Ground. Both sides failed to make much first-half impact, swapping penalties to go into the break at 6-6. Sean Marsden's try then put the Chiefs ahead six minutes after the break. But Pirates responded with four tries of their own from Paul Devlin, captain Gavin Cattle, Mark Ireland and Dave Ward to run out comfortable winners. Danny Gray's boot twice put the Chiefs ahead in a competitive first-half, Rob Cook replying with two penalties of his own for the Pirates. The closest either side came was when the Pirates prop Carl went over, only for the referee to disallow the try and award a penalty in front of the posts. But it was a different story after the break once Marsden had scored the game's first try. The home side were ahead eight minutes later through Devlin, Cook adding the extras. And scrum-half Cattle then collected his own cleverly-placed chip to score in the right corner, Cook converting to stretch the lead to 23-11. Gray pulled back three points from a penalty in front of the posts just before the hour - but it was too little, too late. Replacement Ireland capitalised on a missed tackle, Cook again adding the conversion. And, with the Pirates now in complete control, Ward finished off a series of pick and drives deep in the visitors' 22 to cross near the posts, Cook again converting.
