Guernsey 1st XV beat Effingham and Leatherhead 14-3 at Footes Lane on Saturday to remain third in the London & South East league. Three converted penalties from scrum- half Shane Savage and a last minute try gave the home side the game. Wins for first and second placed London Irish Amateur and Tottonians mean the top three continue to be only four points apart. Captain Simon Sharrott said: "It was always going to be a gritty hard game." He added: "Effingham are no mugs they came over here with a game plan and that was to take us on upfront, we had to step it up one to 15 and I was extremely pleased with how the pack performed. "It was a bit messy in the first half, I think people were getting a bit jittery but we re-grouped at half time, set out our game plan again which was to keep it tight, take them on upfront and we did."
