Jersey skipper Russell Holland with the trophy |
Jersey regained the J Promail Inter-insular Cup after inflicting a 73-7 defeat on Guernsey at St Peter. The game was over as a contest within the first 20 minutes, with Jersey going over four times to lead 26-0. They increased that to 40-0 by half time, and eventually ran in 11 tries. There were nine different try scorers and Tom Turner converted all but two. Jersey coach Dai Burton was delighted with the performance. "It shows what talent there is in Jersey," he said. It looked ominous for Guernsey as early as the second minute, with Tom Hutton going over in front of the posts. | The first team is setting a standard in the National League, and everyone else underneath is growing with it. |
Mike Hunter touched down just four minutes later and the try feast continued unabated in the first half, with scores for Hutton again, Turner, Richie Stevens and Doug Ross. Jersey added a further five tries in the second half, although three of them were breakaway efforts, as Guernsey saw a little more of the ball. Guernsey captain Alec Bailey touched down halfway through the second period to get his side on the scoreboard. But Tim deGruchy, Jason Hosty, Brendan O'Brien, a second for Turner, and Ben de Figueredo completed the misery for Guernsey. For Jersey coach Dai Burton, it was proof that the standard of players available for the home side is very high. "The first team is setting a standard in the National League, and everyone else underneath is growing with it, so today was a great day for us," he said. His counterpart Chris Griffiths told BBC Jersey: "I'm proud of the players' second half. We performed better and put up a good fight. "When we had a bit of ball, we performed quite well, but Jersey are a very good side, so what can you do?" Jersey now lead the series 8-3.
