Cornish Pirates ran out comprehensive winners over local rivals Plymouth Albion in Camborne on Sunday. Pirates outscored the Devon side by seven tries to one, as Albion were made to chase the game from the outset. In the first half the Pirates racked up a 21-0 lead with Chris Morgan, Aisea Havili and Rob Cook all touching down. It was more of the same after the break with further tries from Cook, Gavin Cattle, Sam Betty and Johnny Bentley putting the game out of Albion's reach. Plymouth did manage to trouble the scoreboard late on when centre Matt Hopper went over for a consolation try. | We're desperately disappointed and all the lads are absolutely gutted |
The Pirates' margin of victory was somewhat unexpected after Albion's stunning 23-13 win over the Exeter Chiefs last weekend. In sharp contrast to last Saturday's heroics, Albion captain Tom Skelding described losing to the Pirates as an experience his side will be keen to forget. "It's a shame to see out 2009 in such a way," Skelding told BBC Radio Devon. "We're desperately disappointed and all the lads are absolutely gutted. "Some days you turn up and something's mentally not right, but they came out full guns blazing and full credit to them they were the better side," he added. As a result of Sunday's win, the Pirates have moved up to third in the Championship, their highest league position of the campaign so far, with 41 points. Despite the defeat, Albion stay seventh in the standings on 32 points.
