North Walsham secure bragging rights over Diss

North Walsham's 22-0 home win over county rivals Diss ensured their continued dominance of Norfolk rugby.

After gaining promotion this year, Diss had the chance to overtake the Vikings before Saturday's game.

Tries from Tom Holt, Pena Sokia, Josh Goldspink and Bruce Van Poortvliet secured the win for Walsham.

"We've based a lot of the season around maintaining a position above Diss so it was really important," coach Nick Greenhall told BBC Radio Norfolk.

"We've been watching each other's results, and having been at Walsham for some time you want to recruit the best players to your club, to do that you need to be the best team in your area," he added.

Heavy snow meant every other game in the division was called off, and Greenhall admits it had an affect on their game.

Looking at the bigger picture the result won't mean too much other than local bragging rights

"Obviously it slowed the game down a bit, the ground was pretty stodgy, so the game wasn't as fast as Walsham would have liked it," he said.

"I'm pretty sure the players were keen to get back in the changing room afterwards to be honest."

Walsham are now 16 points clear of the bottom two in National League three and Greenhall says the win has given them a nice cushion.

"Going into a break it's nice to get a victory under your belt as it puts us into a safer position in the league.

"Looking at the bigger picture the result won't mean too much other than local bragging rights," he added.
