McGeechan led the British Lions to a series over South Africa in 2007
British & Irish Lions head coach Ian McGeechan believes the Cornish Pirates have every chance of breaking into rugby's top flight.
McGeechan, who led the Lions on their summer tour of South Africa, told BBC Cornwall the goal of Premiership rugby is not unrealistic for the Pirates.
He said: "I think they [Pirates] have been close for a couple of seasons.
"There's no doubt that you need huge financial commitment to do it now, but I don't see why not," he added.
"I think if the right financial support is there, I think that's where the strong rugby areas can still perform, because there's obviously talent around in Cornwall."
This Pirates push for promotion has got off to a strong start. The Cornish side are currently sitting fourth in the Championship, with four wins from their opening five games.
McGeechan said his own experience of rugby in the county had left a lasting impression on him.
The 2009 Lions boss said: "I played down there with my college side Carnegie at Redruth and St Ives and I'll never forget the intensity and the support that was there."
