Crooks eyes Cambridge promotion

Cambridge rugby coach Bob Crooks says he expects his side to challenge for the sole promotion place from National Division One.

Cambridge missed out on the top spot last season by three points.

Crooks told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "We've set the goal of promotion and now we can forget about that.

"We've got stepping stones that we've put together. If we tick boxes as we get through each goal we should be where we want to be."

There have been only four new signings at West's Renault Park this summer with Luke Fielden and Mike Guess the only significant departures.

Crooks says the side is well established and feels they can use continuity to their advantage this season.

He said: "It's not rocket science, the longer you spend with someone the better you know them.

"If you don't turnover players each year then you should get some semblance of understanding and cohesiveness."

Cambridge travel to Crooks' old club Southend on Saturday for a pre-season friendly.
